Simula: Designed for Gen Z’s everyday and always
The ingenuity of the spatial styling extends deep into the architectural finishes and bespoke decor elements.
When looking at the current landscape of residential interior design, spatial planning has increasingly shifted toward prioritizing emotional resonance, lifestyle integration, and personalized comfort over rigid convention.
This comes to life brilliantly in Simula, a standout residential dining and coffee nook installation featured at the Philippine School of Interior Design (PSID) annual exhibition, “What the Pop!,” which officially launched on 1 October at V-Mall, Greenhills, San Juan City.
The masterminds behind this compelling spatial narrative is a dynamic quintet of graduating designers: Mel Castillon, Khim Garcia, Guin Guiray, Punky Intengan, and Genina Zoleta.
Representing five distinct backgrounds and unique creative philosophies, the designers were brought together by one common denominator: being in their 30s. The team forged a close-knit sisterhood through countless shared plates, sleepless nights and endless orders of snacks and coffee.
What began as a collaborative group of diverse perspectives ultimately blossomed into a profound friendship built upon shared ideas, laughter, and a whole lot of caffeine.
Taking stage at the PSID exhibition, which showcases eight meticulously crafted booths by graduating students exploring the intersection of spatial design and multi-generational pop culture, to translate decades of cultural evolution into interior spaces for the month of October — Simula redefines how young couples experience their homes.
Derived from the Tagalog word for beginning, Simula is a thoughtfully engineered Gen Z residential dining space tailored specifically for newlyweds Cha and Zeke.
The design concept is deeply rooted in the meaningful moments shared over a cup of coffee, acknowledging a larger cultural shift in how younger demographics consume lifestyle experiences. Simula ng umaga, simula ng panghabambuhay (From morning to evening).
“What better way to represent GEN Z than coffee culture,” they said.
Building on this premise, the designers observed how contemporary generations lean heavily toward “third spaces” — social environments separate from home and workplace, such as local specialty cafes. This observation sparked a brilliant spatial translation of bringing the vibrant, communal energy of a cafe directly into the residential floor plan.
“Why not create a third space within your home,” they added.
By integrating this concept into a domestic footprint, the layout transforms everyday coffee routines into a warm, intentional home ritual dedicated to peaceful mornings, deep conversations, and lasting connection. Rather than treating the dining room as a formal, underutilized zone, the space is elevated into a functional hub that mirrors the inviting intimacy of a favorite neighborhood coffeehouse.
Achieving this delicate balance required a sophisticated material palette and meticulous detailing. The space envelops visitors in soft curves, warm neutrals, natural wood, woven textures, and tropical-inspired elements that collectively establish a relaxed, contemporary atmosphere. Every single design choice is deliberate, functioning to ground the open layout while maintaining visual fluidity.
The coffee nook and dining area serve as the beating heart of the residence, successfully bridging everyday domestic routines with shared social experiences. Through this layout, Simula celebrates coffee not simply as a morning beverage, but as an architectural setting for connection, personal identity, and new beginnings.
The ingenuity of the spatial styling extends deep into the architectural finishes and bespoke decor elements.
The designers utilized textured walls to intentionally mimic the cream foam of coffee, flecked with subtle specks of brown shades to represent coffee granules, while graceful architectural arches draw direct inspiration from compressed coffee grounds.
Illuminating the space, bespoke fixtures feature coffee mugs holding the lights, seamlessly blending functional lighting with thematic artistry. For a touch of color, subtle touches of green are artfully incorporated throughout the room, drawing inspiration from fresh coffee foliage and unroasted beans.
Ultimately, the team’s overarching architectural goal was to give character and deep intimacy to the coffee nook, making it feel like the vibrant atmosphere of coffee culture without making you feel like you’re trapped inside a cup of one. By blending generational lifestyle trends with expert spatial design, Simula proves that modern residential interiors can successfully honor personal connection, lifestyle rituals, and creative storytelling all under one roof.
