Some disappearances leave behind more questions than answers. For Sabina, finding her missing mother means following a trail that leads somewhere far more unsettling than she could have imagined.

Netflix’s upcoming Filipino mystery-thriller series Balaraw follows Sabina as she travels to an uncharted island tied to her mother’s disappearance. What begins as a search for answers soon pulls her into a place filled with secrets, strange connections, and a past that may hit closer to home than she expects.

At the heart of the story is Rebecca, Sabina’s mother, whose disappearance has remained unresolved for years. The mystery surrounding her whereabouts eventually leads Sabina to Balaraw, an island that appears to hold its own secrets about Rebecca and the people who have made the place their home.

But Balaraw is not simply a destination in Sabina’s search. The island itself raises unsettling questions. Why does Sabina dream about it even before setting foot there? What happened to those who tried to leave? And what keeps others from walking away?

As Sabina digs deeper, the search for Rebecca becomes intertwined with questions about her own family. The island may have more to reveal about her past than she ever expected, forcing her to confront secrets that have remained hidden for years.

Directed by Rae Red, Balaraw stars Janine Gutierrez, Agot Isidro, and Charlie Dizon. The series blends mystery and thriller elements with a story about family, loss, and the lengths people will go to uncover the truth.

Balaraw premieres on Netflix on 29 October.
