Adamson, UST kick off title duel
Adamson University and the University of Santo Tomas -- the V-League’s most recent champions -- open their best-of-three Collegiate Challenge Finals series, with both teams expecting to go full throttle for the crown at the Filoil EcoOil Centre on Wednesday.
Without Alas standout Shai Nitura, the Lady Falcons prevailed over the Tigresses, 25-23, 25-17, 25-17, in their only meeting on 20 September.
But now that Nitura was finally integrated back into the system and joining forces with Nigerian reinforcement Frances Mordi, the Tigresses’ duo of Reg Jurado and Angge Poyos are looking to elevate their game several notches higher in the 4 p.m. opener.
Adamson is eyeing a second straight title after winning last year, while UST is seeking to reclaim the throne it last held in 2024.
The University of the East, meanwhile, aims for its third V-League podium finish when it takes on Arellano University in the bronze medal match at 1 p.m.
The Lady Falcons have showcased Thirdy Tuddao as a reliable opposite spiker, while Fhei Sagaysay’s playmaking has been on point throughout the tournament.
For Adamson coach JP Yude, it is all about sticking to the basics, especially during crunch time.
“Number one is applying what we practice—how we analyze and study the opponent so we know how and why to execute during the game. Listen and apply. Always follow instructions; maintain discipline when executing on the floor. It’s always about how we respond during high-pressure moments and adverse situations,” Yude said.
“I know what my players are capable of when faced with pressure and tough situations. That’s where their true character is tested. That’s what we want to develop at all times—maturity and mental toughness during the game.”
Marga Altea is also expected to step up alongside Jurado and Poyos, while Cassie Carballo’s orchestration of the Tigresses’ offense will be crucial in setting the tone for UST.
“Preparation is truly crucial for us. Hopefully, we can accomplish even more. In the remaining two or three days before Game 1, we need to build on and refine what we did in the semifinals,” UST head coach Shaq Delos Santos said.
“Looking at our attack percentage in Game 2 against the Lady Chiefs, we had too many lapses compared to Game 1,” he added. “Hopefully, we come out as a much better team.”
All eyes will also be on University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s volleyball powerhouses as defending champion Far Eastern University (FEU) and National University (NU), which last ruled the V-League in 2022, begin their best-of-three title showdown at 6:30 p.m.
The Dryx Saavedra-led Tamaraws defeated the Bulldogs, who boast Alas aces Buds Buddin, Peng Taguibolos, and Leo Ordiales, 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 15-11, in their 20 September meeting.
With the trio of Buddin, Taguibolos, and Ordiales expected to suit up in time for the Finals opener after their Asian Games stint, NU will look to finally dent FEU’s clean record. The three-peat-seeking Tamaraws will enter the title round unbeaten in nine matches.
By making it to the Finals, FEU and NU have already secured spots in the Spikers’ Turf Conference.
