Kim Soo Hyun is back: Comeback is loud, doubt is louder?
When Kim Soo-hyun walked onto a Manila stage on October 2, it was his first large-scale event in the Philippines after an 18-month hiatus. Allegedly 20,000 fans filled the venue waving light sticks. The event, Our Forever With You, was organized with local fashion brand BENCH and sold out.
Who he is?
Kim Soo-hyun was born February 16, 1988, in Seoul, and grew up as an only child. He took acting classes in school on his mother's recommendation, to help him overcome an introverted personality. He debuted on television in 2007 with the sitcom Kimchi Cheese Smile, then raised his profile playing the younger version of the lead in Will It Snow for Christmas? and Giant, which won him Best New Actor at the SBS Drama Awards.
Stardom followed quickly. He led Dream High (2011) and Moon Embracing the Sun (2012), and appeared in the top-grossing films The Thieves and Secretly, Greatly. Then came My Love from the Star (2013), an international phenomenon, especially in China, and the variety drama The Producers (2015), which earned him three Daesang (Grand Prize) awards. After the box-office failure of Real (2017), he enlisted for mandatory military service, and returned with It's Okay to Not Be Okay (2020) and One Ordinary Day (2021).
His biggest recent hit was Queen of Tears (2024), which Netflix reported as the most-watched Korean series ever on the platform, with 682.6 million hours viewed. He is one of South Korea's highest-paid actors, with four Baeksang Arts Awards, two Grand Bell Awards and a Blue Dragon Film Award.
Why Manila?
The Philippines is familiar ground. His popularity there took off with The Moon Embracing the Sun and My Love from the Star, which were so well received that a Filipino adaptation followed. In June 2024, he held his "Eyes on You" fan meeting at the Araneta Coliseum, where he was in tears within the first 15 minutes. Reports say the country has long been one of his strongest overseas markets.
A night of warmth
At the October event, he performed songs from hit Korean dramas, including one from Dream High, and greeted the crowd in Filipino. He described Filipino fans as full of warmth, passion and light, and appeared to choke up several times before promising to return soon. The day before, at a press conference, he thanked fans for the consistent love and support he has received over such a long time.
The backdrop
Kim stepped away from public life after allegations tied to the late actress Kim Sae-ron. In March 2025, the YouTube channel Hover Lab raised claims after she was found dead at her home the previous month. Kim later held a press conference and acknowledged dating her, but rejected claims that the relationship took place when she was a minor.
Here is where things stand, according to reports. In July, police dropped the underage dating charge for lack of evidence. Investigators reportedly determined that a recording used against him was created with generative AI and that purported chat messages were manipulated, and the YouTuber behind the claims was detained and indicted. Watch brand Mido also sued him for about ₩570 million in returned advertising fees. Still, the allegations remain widely believed by some people online.
His comeback has been gradual. He appeared on Indonesian broadcaster RCTI's anniversary show on August 23, and at The Fact Music Awards in Busan on September 19 as a presenter, his first public appearance in South Korea in about 18 months. That one drew a divided response too. Manila was the next step, and reports describe it as a strategic test for a full return to Korean entertainment.
Two reactions, one night
In the arena, fans cheered passionately and chanted slogans of support. Online, a different conversation took hold. A clip of Kim tearing up during the group photo spread on social media and drew a wave of criticism.
Some comments aimed at Filipino fans were harsh. One user wrote that there were apparently so many fools in the Philippines. Another called the country a "land of enablers." A third said Kim had made the Philippines a second home because of his issues in Korea.
For now, Manila has shown it still has his back. Whether the rest of the internet follows is another matter.
