QC logs over 1K leptospirosis cases
Quezon City health authorities recorded 1,037 cases of leptospirosis and 66 related deaths between 1 January and 1 October this year, the local government reported.
Data from the Quezon City Epidemiology and Surveillance Division showed that adults aged 21 and above accounted for 709 cases, representing 68 percent of all recorded infections across the city.
Men comprised the vast majority of cases, accounting for 788 of the total infections.
District 2 recorded the highest concentration of cases in the city with 311, followed by District 4 with 231 cases and District 6 with 146 cases.
Within District 2, several large barangays registered high infection rates, including Barangay Commonwealth with 82 cases, Barangay Batasan Hills with 71, Barangay Payatas B with 55, and Barangay Holy Spirit with 40.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection transmitted through water contaminated with animal urine, particularly from rats, commonly spreading through open wounds during seasonal wading in floodwaters.
