The Catholic Church has renewed calls for an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to protect genuine artworks against those generated by artificial intelligence (AI).

Pope Leo XIV himself made the call in his latest post on X amid concerns brought about by AI-generated images.

The pontiff stated, “The Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.”

“In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce,” he lamented.

“There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others,” he added.

Back in May, the Pope issued his first social encyclical called Magnifica Humanitas, which addressed concerns about AI.

The pontiff appealed in his encyclical that AI should be placed firmly at the service of humanity and must not be used for domination, exclusion and war.
