Hyundai Motor has unveiled the next-generation Tucson in Europe with a larger body, a redesigned cabin and a choice of petrol or electrified powertrains.

The compact sport utility vehicle also introduces technology that allows its hybrid version to operate certain cabin functions without the petrol engine running while the vehicle is parked.

Called HEV Stay Mode, the feature keeps the air-conditioning and audio systems operational during stops. Occupants can also charge their devices without starting the engine. Hyundai describes it as a first for the vehicle’s class.

The regular hybrid uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine and electric assistance to produce 245 PS and 380 Nm of torque.

A plug-in hybrid version develops 292 PS and the same torque output. Its 17.1-kWh battery provides an estimated electric-only driving distance of up to 81 kilometers with 17-inch wheels, subject to final certification.

A 150-PS turbocharged 1.6-liter petrol engine also remains available. European buyers can choose a six-speed manual transmission or a 48-volt mild-hybrid version with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

At 4,560 millimeters long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,670 mm tall, it gains 35 mm in length and width over its predecessor. Height increases by 20 mm, while the wheelbase grows by 40 mm to 2,720 mm.

The larger body provides more passenger room, with 1,002 mm of rear legroom and up to 695 liters of cargo capacity. Rear seats have a 40:20:40 split-folding arrangement and can slide through 150 mm. Wider door openings also make access easier.

Outside, Hyundai has adopted its Art of Steel design approach, with pronounced fenders and straighter body lines. H-Edge lighting distinguishes the front, while Prism rear lamps give the vehicle a different appearance from behind.

The dashboard receives substantial changes, with a slim 9.9-inch digital instrument display ahead of the driver. A central touchscreen comes in either 12.9-inch or 17-inch sizes, depending on specification.

The new Pleos Connect infotainment system runs on Android Automotive OS. It works with the Gleo AI voice assistant, which uses internet information to respond to requests and operate supported functions.

Selected vehicle systems can receive over-the-air software updates. Hyundai Digital Key 2 also allows compatible smartphones and smartwatches to unlock and start the vehicle.

Other available equipment includes two 15-watt wireless charging pads and four 100-watt USB-C ports. Higher specifications offer massage functions for the driver’s seat and three-zone climate control.

Safety equipment consists of seven airbags and an in-cabin monitoring system that checks driver attention and signs of drowsiness. Child Presence Detection and Rear Occupant Alert are also available.

Memory Reverse Assist can help steer the Tucson backward along a previously recorded path of up to 50 meters.

Hyundai will manufacture the new Tucson in the Czech Republic for European markets. Another version with sportier styling will debut at the Paris Motor Show on 12 October.

The European announcement did not specify Philippine pricing or availability. Hyundai said equipment and specifications may vary by market.
