The Philippine National Police said Thursday it is studying strategies used by other ASEAN countries as it expands efforts to combat online abuse, harassment and exploitation targeting women and girls.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said police are strengthening programs against cyber-enabled gender-based violence and improving digital response mechanisms.

“Breaking the cycle of gender-based violence requires new tools and approaches as technology amplifies digital harm,” Nartatez said.

He cited the “AlengPulis with the CyberSquad” program, which is intended to address sexual abuse and exploitation of women in cyberspace.

Nartatez said the PNP is also reviewing best practices from other ASEAN member-states, including measures on platform accountability and digital support systems.

“We are also exploring the ways and best practices of our ASEAN neighbors in terms of platform accountability and digital support systems to determine if we can adapt them in our country,” he said.

The move follows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s call at the ASEAN Women Leaders’ Summit for stronger action against gender-based violence in digital spaces.

Nartatez said the PNP must continue updating its tools as online threats evolve.

“As technology evolves, our response must evolve with it,” he said. “We cannot allow digital platforms to become avenues for the harassment, exploitation, and abuse of women.”
