LOCAL aesthetic with global flair.

The landscape of Philippine design is experiencing a quiet but powerful evolution.

Increasingly, local craft is no longer bound by geography or rigid traditionalism; instead, it is leaning decisively toward globality. Today’s designers are reimagining indigenous materials through a distinctly cosmopolitan lens, creating pieces that resonate just as deeply on the streets of Paris or Tokyo as they do in Manila.

Experiencing—and helping to shape—this very trend is renowned designer Dennis Lustico.

This October, Lustico’s pop-up space at the Powerplant Mall serves as a testament to this global shift. Showcasing a concept he dubs “Filipino Luxe,” the space offers a contemporary designer’s musings on refinement, materiality and the longevity of design in an interconnected world.

While preparing for this second pop-up collection, Lustico found himself reflecting on the inherent potential of local materials—specifically, how they could be manipulated and elevated into garments that effortlessly transcend seasons and borders. “I wanted to tell the story about how materials feel to the touch, and how intentional design can be untouched by time,” he shares.

This intentionality is the bridge between local heritage and international wearability. Rather than designing exclusively for the tropical climate or traditional occasions, Lustico aimed for a borderless aesthetic. “I made a deliberate choice to create a contemporary collection,” he explains. “Pieces were crafted so that you can wear them abroad or for any occasion all year round.”

By successfully infusing his creations with what he describes as a “global air” while still fiercely highlighting local craft, Lustico proves that the future of Filipino design isn’t just about exporting products—it’s about exporting a world-class point of view. DV
