Eala rolls past Garland to enter Asiad semis

Filipina tennis star Alex Eala continues her blazing Asian Games run after toppling Chinese Taipei’s Joanna Garland, 7-5, 6-0, to secure a semifinals seat in the women’s single tennis Wednesday afternoon.

After battling tooth-and-nail in the first set, Eala made sure to open the second set with high-octane offense which led to her semifinals spot with an assurance of a medal.

But another battle awaits Eala as she will also play in the women’s doubles alongside Shaira Rivera.

The pair will clash against China’s Xinyu Jiang and Zhaoxuan Yang at 6:30 p.m. (tentative), Wednesday night.

The 21-year-old inches closer to giving the Philippines a gold medal in the quadrennial event, which was won last 1962 by Johnny Jose.

In 2023, Eala won a bronze medal, ending the Philippines’ 61-year medal drought in Asian Games tennis.
