Table for 20,000

Hindu immigrants abroad celebrate in either August or September Ganesh Chaturthi, a 10-day festival commemorating the birthday of Ganesh, their elephant-headed god of wisdom, prosperity and the removal of obstacles.

Part of the celebration is sculpting a Ganesh clay statue and displaying it at home in a variety of ways. For Bhavini Shah’s family, they spent more than 132 hours finishing this year’s design at their home in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire, the BBC reported.

The Shahs’ previous design was a Ganesh statue covered in rice grains. For this year, the family and their friends glued white Tic Tac mints on the elephant statue. Some 4,500 pieces of the tiny oblong candy were bought and used for the Shahs’ statue.

Meanwhile, people in Romania have joined a fundraiser to help build the country’s first children’s psychiatric hospital in Bucharest.

The local organizer of the charity put together tables along Unirii Boulevard that reached Constitution Square in front of the parliament, a distance of 5.55 kilometers, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

The stunt set a Guinness World Record for the “longest table made from recycled materials.” The Uniting Table, which had flowers and snacks, accommodated some 20,000 people.

Funds raised by the table for 20,000 will help Metropolis Foundation build the children’s psychiatric hospital, which is estimated to cost 16.5 million euros, AP reported.
