P-Pop gets its moment
‘Filipino artists have what it takes to reach audiences beyond the Philippines.’
The P-Pop Music Awards is set to gather Filipino singers, performers and rising groups on 18 October at the Araneta Coliseum, putting local talent front and center.
Award-winning composer and music educator Dr. Mon del Rosario believes Filipino artists have a natural connection to music, with many discovering and developing their talent outside traditional music schools.
For him, that natural ability, along with the creativity and dedication of Filipino performers, gives local artists a strong foundation as they reach audiences both in the Philippines and abroad.
This year’s awards will recognize artists in different areas, including music releases, live performances, music videos and social media engagement. Performances that have reached audiences internationally will also be among those given recognition.
Del Rosario said P-Pop stands out because it brings together several elements of entertainment. Singing and dancing are paired with visual concepts, fashion and stage performance, giving artists plenty of room to create their own style.
The event will also feature newer P-Pop groups alongside more established names in the industry. Del Rosario said recognition from awards programs can be useful for young artists as they work toward building their careers.
He also sees nominations and awards as a way for new groups to have something tangible to work toward as they find their place in the music scene.
For Del Rosario, the bigger goal goes beyond handing out awards. The P-Pop Music Awards also aims to encourage more people to listen to and support original Filipino music.
He noted that local music has gained stronger support from listeners over the years, creating more opportunities for Filipino artists to connect with audiences.
Fans can also expect live performances from local acts and up-and-coming P-Pop groups during the awards night.
Del Rosario will be part of the P-Pop Music Awards jury and is inviting music fans to attend the celebration.
