Go seeks fairer DPWH project distribution

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go called for a fairer distribution of Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) projects, particularly in provinces, rural communities and geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.

Go raised the issue during Senate deliberations on the DPWH’s proposed 2027 budget on 25 September, saying areas with greater infrastructure needs should not be left behind in favor of highly developed urban centers.

“I would also like to raise the apparent inequitable regional allocation of DPWH projects. I have noticed that the areas most in need of infrastructure receive less funding. Projects should not be concentrated only in major cities,” Go said.

“Provinces, rural communities, geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas, particularly in Mindanao and the Visayas, should receive a fair share of infrastructure investments,” he added.

Go said project allocation should be based on community needs rather than geography or political considerations.

He recalled that former President Rodrigo Duterte, upon assuming office in 2016, ordered the government to continue previously approved infrastructure projects even in areas where he did not win.

Go cited the Panguil Bay Bridge as an example of infrastructure that could improve connectivity and travel in Mindanao.

DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said the department had increased Mindanao’s share to 27.55 percent of the overall DPWH budget, while the Visayas accounted for about 20 percent.

Allocations for Regions V, VIII and XIII had also increased, he said.
