PNP deploys personnel, free rides amid transport strike

The Philippine National Police on Monday strengthened public assistance as a three-day transport strike began disrupting the daily commute in parts of the country.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. directed police units to coordinate with local governments, transport authorities and other agencies to assist commuters while maintaining peace and order in affected areas.

Police personnel were deployed to key locations to help stranded passengers, respond to emergencies and coordinate available transportation support. Existing PNP “Libreng Sakay” operations were also mobilized where necessary.

“Kapag may abala sa biyahe, kailangan nandiyan ang police para tumulong. We are preparing not only for security concerns but also for commuters who may be stranded or having difficulty getting to work, school, or home,” Nartatez said.

He also reminded police personnel to remain professional and respect the rights of all sectors during the strike.

“We will respect peaceful expression, and we will also protect the public. Ang mahalaga, may respeto sa karapatan ng bawat isa at walang mapipigilan sa mapayapang paraan,” he said.

MANIBELA began its three-day strike on 28 September to protest rising fuel prices, while PISTON has announced a two-day strike from 29 to 30 September. Inquirer News

In Quezon City, acting QCPD director Brig. Gen. Christopher Olazo said police personnel were strategically deployed along major roads, transport terminals and transportation hubs.

The QCPD also activated its Libreng Sakay program for commuters affected by the strike.

“Handa ang QCPD na tiyakin ang seguridad ng ating QCitizens, commuters, motorista, at mga transport workers,” Olazo said.

Police authorities said they would continue to recognize the right to peaceful assembly while ensuring that commuters, motorists, drivers and transport workers remain safe. The NCRPO had earlier announced heightened police visibility and commuter assistance across Metro Manila for the duration of the strike.
