PNP eyes tech upgrade protecting schools

The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced that it is considering adopting a technology-driven platform nationwide to strengthen real-time coordination among law enforcement, schools and local communities during campus security emergencies.

The plan seeks to expand the “Build Partnership, Early Detection, Swift Alert, Tactical Response” (B.E.S.T.) School Alert and Rapid Response System, a mobile application developed by Police Regional Office 4A in Calabarzon to enable immediate incident reporting and tactical action.

“We are exploring the institutionalization of this rapid response system to further help us identify and respond to threats in schools, as well as ensure better coordination and swift action in any incident or challenge,” PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said in a statement.

The national security initiative follows directives from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla to enhance public safety, strengthen emergency preparedness, and protect students amid growing concerns over recent violent incidents on school grounds.

Under the initial Calabarzon pilot program, approximately 155 schools are preparing to use the application as part of a centralized emergency reporting grid.

“Technology is a critical aspect of our security and law enforcement, and our personnel must have access to modern facilities and training innovations to improve our security systems,” Nartatez said.

To support potential nationwide deployment, the PNP plans to collaborate with the Department of Information and Communications Technology to refine and maintain the platform’s digital infrastructure.

Nartatez commended the Calabarzon regional police office for creating the emergency response platform, adding that the best practices of individual regional units can provide the framework for nationwide police improvements.
