CBCP backs Anti-Political Dynasty Law passage

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Friday expressed full support for the enactment of an anti-political dynasty law, following a landmark Supreme Court ruling ordering Congress to enforce the long-dormant constitutional prohibition.

CBCP president and Lipa Archbishop Gilbert Garcera issued a statement urging lawmakers to pass meaningful legislation that would bar political families from monopolizing public elective office.

“After almost 40 years, the constitutional command against political dynasties should no longer remain merely an aspiration,” Garcera said. “The time has come to give it genuine meaning in law and political life.”

Garcera’s statement came after the Supreme Court ruled that Congress must fulfill its constitutional mandate to define and prohibit political dynasties under Article II, Section 26 of the 1987 Constitution, which guarantees equal access to opportunities for public service.

While acknowledging that strong family ties remain a cornerstone of Philippine culture, the prelate stressed that leadership roles in government must not be treated as private heirlooms.
