Anne Hathaway embraces her darkest role yet

Anne Hathaway steps into one of her most unsettling roles yet as bestselling novelist Verity Crawford in Verity, the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's hit psychological thriller arriving in Philippine cinemas on 30 September.

Hathaway plays the enigmatic author whose life becomes the subject of suspicion after struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh, portrayed by Dakota Johnson, is hired to complete Verity's unfinished books. While staying at the Crawford estate, Lowen discovers disturbing personal writings that blur the line between truth and fiction and cast doubt on everything she knows about Verity and her husband, Jeremy, played by Josh Hartnett.

The Oscar winner, who also serves as a producer on the film, said she immediately understood why Hoover's novel became a publishing phenomenon.

"There's so much propulsive energy to [Hoover's] books, it's like eating something really delicious and you can't quite stop yourself. You just can't, you want to get to the next page," Hathaway said. "When I came up for air at the end of it I thought, 'Oh, I completely understand why people went crazy for this book.'"

Director Michael Showalter, who previously worked with Hathaway on The Idea of You, said she was his first choice for the role.
