Samsung expands Laguna footprint with P2-B high-tech plant

CALAMBA CITY, Laguna — Samsung Electro-Mechanics Philippines is moving to further expand its manufacturing footprint in Laguna with a new P2-billion facility for the production of inductors used in advanced electronic applications.

The proposed investment has been submitted to the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) for approval and will involve the construction of a new manufacturing building at the Calamba Premiere International Park.

Multilayer ceramic capacitor operations

The project comes on top of Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ much larger P50.7-billion expansion of its multilayer ceramic capacitor operations in Calamba, strengthening Laguna’s position as one of the country’s major electronics manufacturing hubs.

PEZA has also disclosed that another Samsung investment, expected to be bigger than the P2-billion project, is being prepared although a formal application has yet to be filed.

The series of investments could have a broader impact on Laguna’s electronics supply chain.

Around 30 Tier-1 suppliers of Samsung Electro-Mechanics are expected to visit the Philippines in October to assess potential investment and localization opportunities, according to PEZA.

Manufacturing facility in Calamba

Samsung Electro-Mechanics has operated its Philippine manufacturing facility in Calamba since 1997. Its products include multilayer ceramic capacitors and inductors used in electronics, automotive applications and other advanced technologies.

The company’s continuing expansion comes as the government seeks to attract more semiconductor and electronics investments and encourage global manufacturers to bring more of their suppliers into the country.

The proposed P2-billion facility would add another manufacturing operation to Samsung’s growing Laguna complex while the anticipated supplier visits could open opportunities for additional investments around the province.
