Pinay spikers advance to battle for ninth

Alas Pilipinas rolls past Mongolia in straight sets in the classification round of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games women's volleyball competition.

Alas Pilipinas swept Mongolia, 25-13, 25-11, 25-20, in the second phase of the classification round to advance to the battle for ninth place in the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games women’s volleyball competition on Monday at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Gymnasium.

Angel Canino returned to action after sitting out Alas’ straight-sets win over Qatar to start the round the night before and dropped 14 points on 13 kills and a kill block.

The De La Salle University ace added eight digs in an all-around performance for the Philippines, which needed only 63 minutes to send the Mongolians down to the battle for 11^th.

Alyssa Solomon scored 11 of her 12 points from kills while Bella Belen had 11 markers on eight attacks, two kill blocks and an ace for Alas.

The Filipinas take on Hong Kong, which dominated Nepal, 25-20, 25-19, 28-26, in the battle for ninth Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Amarbayasgalan Batbold and Ninjbolor Battur paced Mongolia with nine markers each.
