Partnerships Powering Communities: Meralco’s Collaborative Approach to Sustainability

For Manila Electric Company (Meralco), sustainability goes beyond powering homes and businesses. The Manuel V. Pangilinan-led company has been steadfast in creating meaningful impact that sparks better lives, energizes communities and protects the environment. Anchored on its sustainability agenda, “Powering the Good Life,” Meralco advances its commitments through four pillars: Power, Planet, People and Prosperity.

And behind every successful initiative, Meralco recognizes yet another essential aspect that brings these pillars to life: Partnership — the one that helps turn sustainability commitments into action.

From environmental stewardship initiatives to urban farms and community nutrition programs, Meralco’s growing network of collaborations with local governments, schools and community organizations demonstrates how partnerships serve as the catalyst that transforms sustainability goals into tangible outcomes.

Taking responsibility

For Meralco’s Novaliches Business Center, this journey began in 2021 through initiatives that advanced environmental responsibility and active community engagement. From two of Meralco’s flagship programs — Race to Zero Waste and PowerPlants Urban Farming — grew projects such as Trash to Trees and later Trash Kita! which mobilized employees to collect recyclable materials from their homes and workplaces. Proceeds from these efforts were used to purchase vegetable seeds and farming materials, supporting urban farming projects while promoting a culture of waste reduction and recycling.

These efforts paved the way for a larger partnership with Sharon Farm in Barangay Nova Proper, one of Quezon City’s model farms under the GrowQC Food Security Program. Together with employee volunteers, residents and community stakeholders, vegetables were cultivated to help support local food security efforts. More importantly, the initiative demonstrated how collaboration can create value that extends beyond environmental benefits and directly contributes to community wellbeing.

Partnerships

Building on this success, Novaliches Business Center launched Harvesting Sustainability: Urban Farming with Trimming Debris in partnership with Barangay Talipapa. Tree trimmings and other vegetation collected from Meralco’s routine line-clearing activities were converted into organic fertilizer and compost, supporting urban farming activities while reducing waste. What would have otherwise been discarded became a valuable resource that helped enrich soil, boost crop production and promote sustainable agricultural practices at the community level.

The spirit of partnership continued through collaborations with the One Meralco Foundation and Placido Del Mundo Elementary School, culminating in a Community Soup Kitchen Program that provided nutritious meals to undernourished students. From recycling projects and urban farms to feeding programs, these initiatives illustrate how partnerships can generate multiple layers of social, environmental and economic value.

A similar story developed at Roosevelt Business Center through its collaboration with Barangay Talayan. What started as conversations around community needs evolved into an opportunity to support an existing urban farming initiative through PowerPlants, Meralco’s greening program that transforms open spaces into productive gardens.

Roosevelt Business Center employees joined barangay representatives in preparing planting sites, cultivating vegetables and enhancing garden spaces. With support from the Balintawak Sector, retired pole materials were repurposed into plant boxes and farm fencing, demonstrating how sustainability and innovation can work hand in hand. The collaboration culminated in the formal signing of a partnership agreement between Meralco and Barangay Talayan in June 2025, further strengthening Meralco’s commitment to community-driven sustainability.

A lived reality

For Meralco head of Home and Micro Business (North Business Area) Alleni O. Pascual underscored the value of partnering with local governments and community organizations to make sustainability a lived reality.

“Sustainable progress happens when we work hand in hand with our local communities. Through our strong partnerships in Quezon City — repurposing line-clearing debris into organic compost and transforming scrap wood into productive community gardens — we demonstrate how collaborative, practical solutions directly advance Meralco’s commitment to People, Power, Planet and Prosperity,” says Pascual.

Meralco chief sustainability officer Raymond B. Ravelo, meanwhile, emphasized how collaboration amplifies the impact of Meralco’s flagship programs: “Race to Zero Waste and PowerPlants Urban Farming are proof that sustainability thrives when partnerships take root. By joining forces with local governments, schools and community organizations, we transform waste into resources, open spaces into gardens, and shared goals into lasting community benefits. Partnerships power communities — and they are the driving force that powers the good life for all.”

The success of these efforts was further recognized when Novaliches Business Center’s Harvesting Sustainability: Urban Farming with Trimming Debris received a Merit Award at the 21st Philippine Quill Awards. These initiatives prove that sustainable progress is possible when organizations and communities work together toward a shared purpose.
