Lyceum gets past Mapua for 1st victory

Lyceum of the Philippines University slipped past Mapua University, 88-87, to finally get on the win column in Season 102 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament on Monday at the Philsports Arena.

Lance Aurigue delivered in the clutch, scoring four of his 21 points in the final 68 seconds while also grabbing 13 rebounds for a double-double as the Pirates secured their first victory under head coach Jamike Jarin.

Trailing 84-85 with 1:08 left, Aurigue converted a putback layup to put Lyceum ahead, 86-85.

The veteran then calmly sank two free throws with 38 seconds remaining to stretch the Pirates’ lead to 88-85.

Marc Cuenco kept Mapua alive by making two of three free throws with 27 seconds left, cutting the deficit to one, 87-88.

The Cardinals had one final chance, but Yam Concepcion missed a three-pointer at the buzzer as Lyceum held on for the victory.
