Chinese booters blast Filipinas

The Philippine national women’s football team suffered a 1-5 loss to China to finish third in Group G in the 20th Asian Games at the Gifu Nagaragawa Stadium in Japan on Monday.

With a 2-1-0 win-draw-loss record, the Chinese not only clinched the top spot but also advanced to the knockout stages in the prestigious continental showpiece.

Wang Yanwen picked up a hat trick for the Chinese after scoring in the 20th, 40th and 49th minutes while Chen Qiaozhu, who scored in the 49th minute, and Yuan Cong, who scored in the 90+2 minute, added more damage for their second win in three games.

Skye Leach was the lone Filipina to score in the 65th minute off a corner kick from Katrina Guillou.

Despite the loss, the Philippines’ 1-1-1 record is good enough to enter the knockout stages as one of the best third-place teams in the Asiad

However, the Filipinas will have an uphill battle Friday as they will face either Chinese Taipei or host Japan next.

The defending champions eliminated the Philippines, 8-1, in the quarterfinal of the Hangzhou Asiad in 2023 in China.
