Lusaran water lagoon okayed

CEBU CITY — The Cebu City Council has unanimously approved a resolution of “no objection” to the construction of a 200,000-cubic-meter water impounding lagoon in Barangay Lusaran to support the bulk supply of potable water to upland communities.

North District Councilor Alvin Arcilla, who authored the resolution, said the project will be subject to J.E. Hydro and Bio-Energy Corp.’s compliance with all applicable laws, environmental requirements, permits and clearances from government agencies.

The Lusaran Barangay Council has also issued a certification of no objection, citing the project’s potential to improve water resource management and provide economic and social benefits while ensuring environmental safeguards.

Meanwhile, Cebu City received an additional five million liters of water per day from J.E. Hydro starting Saturday.

Mayor Nestor Archival announced the additional supply following a meeting with Metro Cebu Water District Chairman Ruben Almendras, General Manager John DX Lapid and J.E. Hydro Director Neil Dargantes.

“This will significantly improve the water supply in Pulangbato, Pit-os, Bacayan, Talamban and neighboring areas. The improvements should be felt starting around 12 noon today,” Archival said.

He thanked MCWD and J.E. Hydro for their “swift action and collaboration.”

Archival said water security remains a priority amid the looming El Niño, which could further strain water resources.
