DPWH upgrades Marikina drainage network

Public Works officials have begun a drainage widening project along Sumulong Highway in Marikina City to reduce severe flooding across low-lying neighborhoods, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced.

Crews are installing two-meter-wide high-density polyethylene pipes along a 1.3-kilometer section of the thoroughfare.

DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon inspected the construction site earlier this week, noting that the oversized pipes will handle heavy water runoffs during major storms while functioning as underground detention basins.

Dizon said that the Marikina project aligns with orders from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to modernize Metro Manila’s drainage systems, many of which date back to the post-World War II era.

Crews are accelerating pipe installation along the corridor to complete the upgraded drainage infrastructure as quickly as possible.
