Alas Women eye strong finish

NAGOYA, Japan – The Alas Pilipinas Women try to salvage some measure of pride when they battle Qatar in the classification round of the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 on Sunday.

Beaten by Kazakhstan in a virtual knockout match for one of the quarterfinal slots on Wednesday, the Nationals are expected to vent their frustration on the Qataris in their 5 p.m. showdown at the Okazaki Chua Soho Park.

Alas is jockeying for 9th to 14th places.

Alas also lost to China in the opener, but not before giving the reigning champions a scare in the first two sets. They eventually suffered an 18-25, 22-25, 8-25 defeat.

In the quarters that will be held at the Park Arena Komaki, Japan will face Chinese-Taipei, South Korea takes on Kazakhstan and Thailand tackles South East Asian rival Indonesia.

China is going to face Vietnam, with the former heavily favored to cruise into the semis.

Meantime, the dynamic beach volleyball duo of Sisi Rondina and Bernadete Pons begins their bid against a Bangladesh pair at Hekinan Ryokuchi Beach Court.
