Sara pressed over receipts
Partylist group Akbayan on Monday challenged Vice President Sara Duterte to explain the source of her wealth as the Senate impeachment court began hearing allegations that her assets and financial interests did not match her lawful income and declared wealth.
Akbayan staged a protest outside the Senate as House prosecutors began presenting Article II of Duterte’s impeachment complaint, which centers on allegations of unexplained wealth.
“Clearly, Sara has amassed wealth, but the question is, where are the receipts? Where are the documents showing where these came from and proving that they are legal and legitimate?” Akbayan president Rafaela David said.
David cited records from the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) showing P6.77 billion in 663 covered and suspicious transactions involving accounts linked to Duterte and her husband, Manases Carpio, from 2006 to 2025.
Evidence cited?
Akbayan also raised the alleged irregular use and liquidation of P612.5 million in confidential funds of the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education, saying these issues should be examined alongside the allegations concerning Duterte’s wealth.
“If there are no receipts, Sara’s wealth is illegitimate. Sara Duterte must be held accountable, not because of who she is, but because of what the evidence shows,” David said.
AMLC executive director Ronel Buenaventura earlier told lawmakers that the reports covered 630 transactions and 33 suspicious transactions involving Duterte and Carpio.
