North Korea hails Russia bridge as sign of closer ties

SEOUL (AFP) — North Korea hailed the opening of its first road bridge with Russia as a sign of strengthening ties between the two countries, state media reported Tuesday.

The bridge over the Tumen River adds a road connection to existing rail and air links as Pyongyang and Moscow deepen military and economic cooperation.

“The completion of the bridge is a significant event adding a new dynamic movement to the overall bilateral cooperation,” North Korean official Pak Thae Song said, according to state news agency KCNA.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said the bridge would further strengthen connections between the two countries. Russia expects the route to accommodate growing freight and passenger traffic.

North Korea has sent thousands of troops to Russia since 2024, while Ukraine has accused Moscow of using North Korean missiles in its attacks.

The two countries also signed a defense treaty in 2024 providing mutual support if either is attacked.
