Atty. Mohammad Ben-Usman is the new Sultan of Masiu

Over 10,000 people gathered in Lanao del Sur to witness the historic enthronement of Atty. Mohammad Ben-Usman as the new Sultan of Masiu, alongside his wife, Atty. Rosaemmah Mapupuno Salic, who was installed as the Potre Maamor.

As the head of the largest of Lanao’s 16 centuries-old royal houses — a domain spanning nine municipalities — Sultan Ben-Usman steps into a role deeply rooted in taritib (traditional social order) and ijma (consensus-based governance).

While acknowledging the necessity of a legitimate royal bloodline, the new Sultan stressed that a title is not enough; leadership demands integrity, competence and public acceptance. His core agenda includes:

Community & Culture: Preserving Meranaw heritage, advancing youth and women’s development, and expanding economic opportunities for marginalized families.

Peace & Order: Mediating rido (clan feuds) alongside traditional and religious leaders.

Education & Faith: Championing madrasah education and empowering local mosques and imams.

Sultan Ben-Usman brings a strong public service and academic background to the throne. He previously served as a Customs Collector in Cagayan de Oro City. A cum laude graduate in law and mathematics from Mindanao State University, he was also recognized as one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines in 2010. His wife, Potre Maamor Rosaemmah, is also an MSU-educated lawyer and accountant who actively advocates for women’s representation and cultural preservation.

Enthronement in Taraka

The week-long celebration took place in Taraka (Dalem a Masiu), considered the birthplace of the Lanao Sultanate. The festivities drew thousands of supporters, government officials, and royal leaders from across Mindanao. Guests were treated to traditional three-layered Meranaw delicacies and the presentation of nearly 100 marigays — ceremonial gifts adorned with cultural motifs.

True to his progressive outlook, Sultan Ben-Usman honors the tradition of his lifetime tenure but remains focused on the bigger picture: “I do not wish to monopolize the opportunity to serve and lead. The responsibility of leadership should, in due time, also be entrusted to other members of our royal family.”
