Habagat to bring heavy rains over Ilocos, Northern Luzon through 3 September

The southwest monsoon or Habagat is expected to continue bringing heavy rains across parts of Northern and Central Luzon through Thursday, 3 September, with flooding and landslides possible in several areas, according to DOST-PAGASA.

In its weather advisory issued at 11 p.m. Monday, 31 August 31, PAGASA forecast 100 to 200 millimeters of rainfall over Benguet from Monday night through Tuesday evening, 1 September.

Numerous flooding incidents are likely in Benguet, particularly in urbanized and low-lying communities and areas near rivers, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Landslides are also likely in areas moderately to highly susceptible to them.

PAGASA said Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Batanes, Abra, Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Tarlac, Pampanga, Zambales and Bataan may receive 50 to 100 millimeters of rain during the same period.

Localized flooding is possible, particularly in urbanized and low-lying areas and communities near rivers, while landslides may occur in highly susceptible areas.

The heavy rainfall outlook is expected to continue in the coming days.

From Tuesday evening to Wednesday evening, September 2, Benguet and Zambales may receive 100 to 200 mm of rain, while Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Tarlac, Pampanga and Bataan may receive 50 to 100 mm.

From Wednesday evening to Thursday evening, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan and Occidental Mindoro may receive 100 to 200 mm of rain. Another 50 to 100 mm may fall over Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, La Union, Pangasinan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Cavite and Batangas.

PAGASA warned that rainfall totals could be higher in mountainous and elevated areas. The effects of the rains could also be aggravated by significant rainfall already
