Over 500 Southern Leyte students open bank accounts

More than 1,000 students joined a financial inclusion activity at the Southern Leyte State University in Sogod, Southern Leyte, resulting in the opening of 528 transaction accounts.

Held on 20 August 2026, the activity was led by the Youth Financial Inclusion Ambassadors from the Visayas in collaboration with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). It was the second transaction account-opening activity in the region under the YFI Ambassadors Program.

The participating banks assisted students in opening transaction accounts, which can provide access to financial services such as payments, savings, credit, insurance and investments.

The BSP also discussed financial inclusion and literacy, emphasizing how access to financial services and sound financial knowledge can help young Filipinos make informed financial decisions and improve their financial well-being.

The activity builds on a similar onboarding event at SLSU in August 2025, when 551 transaction accounts were opened. The YFI initiative is aligned with the National Strategy for Financial Inclusion 2022-2028 and seeks to expand financial access and capability among young Filipinos.

The activity was supported by the Department of Information and Communications Technology and financial service providers.
