Bishop: Protect forests, curb flooding

San Fernando Bishop Daniel Presto has urged the government to strengthen environmental protection as part of efforts to address the country’s persistent flooding problems.

“We know that heavy rainfall is being exacerbated by climate change, so the government, with the cooperation of every citizen, should further intensify efforts to protect the environment, including planting trees in the mountains,” he said over Church-owned Radyo Veritas.

“Let us especially urge our government officials to protect and preserve the remaining forests in our country,” he added.

Presto said the government should not allow trees to be cut unless necessary and should carefully scrutinize the issuance of mining permits to ensure that mountains, farmlands and bodies of water are not damaged.

“Government officials should first consider what is best for our country,” he said.

“I appeal to everyone to avoid profiting from government projects such as flood control, roads, schools, hospitals and others,” Presto added.

The bishop also urged the public to draw lessons from recent flooding when choosing candidates for elective positions.

“Let us choose leaders who truly care about our country, whose priority is the welfare of the people, especially the poor, and the betterment of our nation,” he said.
