Australia bans AI-only songs on top charts
ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd said the changes aim to protect ‘the human nature of artistry’ as AI reshapes the music industry.
SYDNEY (AFP) — Fully AI-generated songs will no longer qualify for Australia’s top music charts under new rules aimed at preserving human creativity, the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) said Tuesday.
Starting Friday, songs must be “substantially human made” to be eligible for the ARIA Charts.
“Wholly AI-generated tracks will not be eligible for the ARIA Charts,” ARIA said.
Songs using generative AI only as a supporting tool will remain eligible, it said.
The move follows growing concern over the rise of AI-generated music on streaming platforms.
In July, an AI-assisted cover of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” reached No. 1 in Australia before its use of AI-generated vocals and drums drew scrutiny.
ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd said the changes aim to protect “the human nature of artistry” as AI reshapes the music industry.
“The ARIA Charts will always remain a transparent measurement of the music Australia consumes, but a chart that rewards unlicensed AI output would undercut the very basis of the recorded music we exist to represent,” she said.
