Meralco upgrades Tondo substation
The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) completed a major infrastructure upgrade at its North Port Substation in Tondo, Manila, boosting network safety and power service reliability across the capital.
The project involved upgrading 10 power circuit breakers and 19 disconnect switches from 40 kiloamperes to 63 kiloamperes. Meralco also reinforced control cabling and performed associated civil works to enhance system safety.
The upgrades allow the 115-kilovolt facility to withstand higher fault current levels, reducing power disruption risks and ensuring safer distribution across the grid.
Key establishments benefiting from the upgraded infrastructure include Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center, Tondo Medical Center, Light Rail Transit stations, Mapúa University, and Lyceum of the Philippines University.
Meralco executives stated that the project aligns with ongoing capital investments aimed at modernizing grid infrastructure to support its customer base of more than 8 million subscribers.
