QC leptospirosis cases now 161; deaths hit 20

Leptospirosis cases in Quezon City have risen to 161 from 1 January to 13 August, according to the city’s latest leptospirosis surveillance update. Twenty people have died from the disease.

The figures are up from the previous tally of 138 cases and 18 deaths reported on 4 August.

Of the current cases, 119, or 74 percent, involved people aged 21 and older. Most of those infected were men, with 129 cases.

Leptospirosis is caused by Leptospira bacteria, which can be found in the urine of infected rats and can contaminate dirty water, including floodwater.

The public is reminded to avoid wading or playing in floodwater. People who need to enter floodwater are advised to use protective gear such as boots and gloves.

Those who accidentally wade through floodwater are advised to immediately consult a health center for appropriate preventive treatment against the disease.
