DoTr, DoT eye travel connectivity boost

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez met with Department of Tourism (DoT) Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay to discuss infrastructure projects aimed at improving regional connectivity and boosting international and domestic tourism.

The bilateral meeting follows directives from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for the Department of Transportation (DoTr) to align with other cabinet agencies to enhance accessibility across key domestic destinations.

Lopez provided updates on several active and planned maritime and aviation developments, including Siargao Airport, Benoni Port in Camiguin Island and Jubang Port in Surigao del Norte.

The Transportation chief detailed passenger terminal upgrades and runway extension projects at regional airports in Busuanga, Tacloban, Aklan, Tuguegarao, Siargao, Bukidnon and Laoag.

Officials cited that longer runways will enable regional facilities to accommodate larger aircraft, increasing passenger capacity and driving down airfares.

“Our infrastructure projects are designed not just to move people, but to open up opportunities for local communities and strengthen our tourism industry nationwide,” Lopez said.

“This collaboration with DoT is essential to realizing the full potential of our tourism sector,” he added.
