Palace backs Zamboanga Sibugay territorial defense

ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY -- Malacañang has backed efforts to boost territorial defense and disaster response in the Zamboanga Peninsula following the launch Monday of a multi-agency joint exercise.

Special Assistant to the President (SAP) Anton Lagdameo Jr. led the opening of the KALASAG–Zamboanga Peninsula Inter-Agency Territorial Defense Operation Exercise, conveying President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s appreciation to participating agencies, local government units, and security forces.

Lagdameo said the exercise comes at a critical time as the region transitions from internal security operations toward broader defensive readiness.

“KALASAG-Sibugay comes at an important point in our security efforts in the Zamboanga Peninsula,” Lagdameo said.

“This means strengthening our territorial defense and making sure we are ready for challenges that may come not only from within but also from beyond our borders,” he added.

The exercise tests the ability of government institutions to respond to external threats, protect critical infrastructure, maintain government operations during crises, and safeguard civilians.

Lagdameo stressed that effective crisis response relies on seamless coordination across sectors.

“No single agency or sector can answer these questions alone,” he said. “This is why inter-agency coordination is at the heart of KALASAG-Sibugay.”

He added that preparedness requires keeping basic government services functional and ensuring accurate public information alongside military readiness.

Following the opening ceremony, Lagdameo met with local officials and security leaders, including Zamboanga Sibugay Governor Ann Hofer, during an executive briefing to discuss regional security and national-local coordination.

The exercise forms part of the national government’s whole-of-government approach to regional security and disaster resilience.
