Influencers chase risky travel content
Extreme travel content is gaining popularity on social media as creators visit high-risk destinations despite government warnings, drawing millions of views while raising concerns from security experts.
One example is American cyclist Ian Andersen, who entered Iran in June 2025 during a 10,000-mile bike journey from Portugal to Japan despite a US State Department “Do Not Travel” advisory. Days later, Israeli airstrikes struck sites near his location, forcing him to leave through Azerbaijan.
Experts warned that such expeditions expose travelers to risks beyond accidents, including arbitrary detention, surveillance, espionage accusations and costly emergency evacuations that may not even be possible in conflict zones.
Despite the dangers, many creators say the journeys offer meaningful cultural experiences and personal growth, while audiences continue to fuel demand for increasingly ambitious travel content.
