Caloocan crash claims police officer

A 33-year-old police officer died early Tuesday after his motorcycle was run over by a 10-wheeler truck along C-3 Road in Caloocan following a 24-hour shift for the State of the Nation Address (SoNA).

The victim was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital. Family members confirmed he was returning home to Caloocan after serving on deployment during the President’s address on Monday.

Security camera footage captured the truck driving along the road around 2 a.m., followed shortly by images of the officer and his motorcycle down on the pavement.

A witness who was traveling near the officer said the motorcycle began swerving as it approached 5th Avenue before attempting to pass the truck.

“I noticed he was already swerving,” the witness said. “There was a trailer ahead of us, and he tried to overtake. He clipped the driver’s side, scraped against it, fell toward the middle, and was caught under two wheels.”

Family members attributed the swerving to extreme fatigue following his extended shift.

“He came straight from SoNA duty where he worked for 24 hours,” the officer’s aunt said. “The swerving was likely because he was exhausted. Imagine working those hours and then riding a motorcycle home. He had been a police officer for almost four years.”

The 37-year-old truck driver, who was hauling concrete blocks from Pampanga to Malabon, was taken into police custody.
