Liza hails TAC legacy

First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos marked the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC), describing it as a lasting symbol of peace, mutual respect and regional solidarity.

Established in 1976, the TAC embodies the principles of peaceful coexistence and friendly cooperation among Southeast Asian nations. It serves as a legally binding code governing inter-state relations in the region and was amended in 1987, 1998, and 2010 to allow the accession of countries outside Southeast Asia and regional organizations composed of sovereign states.

“It was a joy to welcome leaders from across Southeast Asia and beyond as we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation,” the First Lady said in a Facebook post.

“For five decades, TAC has been a symbol of peace and mutual respect — bringing together 62 countries across five continents through dialogue, trust and cooperation,” she added.

As of October 2024, the treaty had 55 High Contracting Parties.

“As our guests return home, I hope they bring with them not only wonderful memories of our country but also a deeper appreciation of the friendships that unite us and the shared commitment to build a more peaceful future for all,” Mrs. Marcos said.
