Give me ‘Vaquero’

Fresh from cementing his status as mandatory challenger, Charly Suarez and his camp will pursue the call for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) to compel Mexican champion Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete to face the Filipino in a rematch.

“By destroying Manuel Avila, Charly Suarez proved once again that he is the top contender to Emanuel Navarrete, and we ask the WBO to enforce their order and direct his team to start negotiating for a rematch,” said Suarez’s new promoter Sampson Lewkowicz in a story posted by boxingscene.

Suarez needed less than a round to get the job done with referee Ray Corona forced to stop the scheduled 10-rounder with 29 seconds remaining before the end of the opening round.

“Thank you to Garry Jonas and ProBoxTV for giving Charly this high-profile opportunity to show his talents and make a strong case for another title shot,” said Lewkowicz about the fight that took place in San Bernardino, California.

Navarrete had been ordered by the WBO to meet Suarez in a rematch after the controversial ending of their May 2025 clash in San Diego where the fight was called to a halt due to a hideous cut on the Mexican’s eye.

Initially, it was ruled a technical decision win by Navarrete since referee Ed Collantes ruled that a butt — and not a legal blow — caused the injury.

But a super slo-mo video replay showed that a punch — a left by Suarez — had opened the cut.

The California State Athletic Commission, upon investigating the matter, later overturned the decision from a technical decision win to a No-Contest.

While Suarez waited for the rematch to happen, Navarrete managed to do a fight, a unification showdown with International Boxing Federation titlist Eduardo Nuñez, in an all-Mexican showdown that he won last February in Arizona.

But instead of initiating talks for a Suarez rematch, Navarrete is training his sights on another unification fight — this time versus O’Shaquie Foster of the United States — the World Boxing Council champion.

Reports have it that the two are being eyed to fight each other sometime in September.

Suarez, who has a 19-0 win-loss card with 11 knockouts, is turning 38 this August.
