‘Wonderwall’: England’s World Cup Anthem

Nearly three decades after its release, Oasis' iconic hit "Wonderwall" is enjoying a global resurgence as England supporters have adopted it as the unofficial anthem of the national team's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

The Britpop classic has climbed from No. 150 to No. 15 on Spotify's global chart during the tournament, marking its highest position in the streaming era as fans sing the song after every England victory.

The tradition began after England's opening World Cup win over Croatia in Dallas, when FIFA stadium entertainment officials opted to play "Wonderwall" instead of the team's usual post-match song, "Sweet Caroline."

As the song played, England players and thousands of supporters sang together in what striker Harry Kane later described as one of his favorite moments wearing the England shirt.

The spontaneous singalong quickly became a post-match tradition, with fans embracing the song as a symbol of hope for an England side chasing its first World Cup title since 1966.

The resurgence has also benefited Oasis on streaming platforms, adding to the band's renewed popularity following its blockbuster reunion tour in 2025.

"Wonderwall" is among several songs boosted by World Cup fever, alongside Shakira and Burna Boy's official tournament anthem "Dai Dai" and John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads," which has become popular among United States supporters.

Reacting to the song's renewed success, Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher wrote on social media that the track's revival was deserved because it is "a classic."
