Historic boat recalls Pag-asa voyage

B/B Florentino Das is berthed at the Pasig River Esplanade in Manila, creating a striking contrast between a traditional vessel and the modern high-rise buildings of the San Nicolas district. One of its most notable expeditions took place in the West Philippine Sea in 2024, when it sailed from Butuan City to Palawan before reaching Pag-asa Island in the contested waters of the West Philippine Sea.

The B/B Florentino Das is currently berthed at the Pasig River Esplanade, standing in contrast to the modern high-rise buildings of Manila’s San Nicolas district.

The traditional vessel is known for its 2024 expedition to the West Philippine Sea, during which it sailed from Butuan City to Palawan before reaching Pag-asa Island. The voyage highlighted the vessel’s role in promoting maritime heritage and awareness of the country’s presence in the contested waters.

Named after Filipino navigator Florentino Das, the vessel has been used in various sailing expeditions showcasing traditional seafaring and navigation.
