Lose oneself in Lucerne

The gateway to the Swiss Alps is Lucerne, a compact city known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, whose continued existence is a testament to the city’s grit and growth. Bordered by the 14th-century rampart, the Musegg Wall, the city has as its centerpiece the covered Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge), which connects the Altstadt (Old Town) to the right bank of the Reuss River.

Apart from admiring the overhead religious paintings dating back to 1333, the wooden bridge is a good vantage point from which to watch and interact with swans and ducks. Along the riverbanks are different restaurants offering local and international fare. The area becomes particularly romantic at night, when the bridge’s soft yellow lights are joined by the harmonies of street violinists and musicians.
