Despite rising fuel prices, Filipino devotees continued to observe Visita Iglesia on Maundy Thursday, adjusting their plans while remaining committed to their faith.
At St. Mary Magdalene Church, a steady stream of worshippers filled the grounds, offering prayers and completing the Stations of the Cross both inside and outside the church. Some opted to stay longer in a single church rather than travel farther, citing higher transportation costs.
Josie, 35, who has practiced Visita Iglesia for a decade, said her group decided to limit their visits this year. “We’ll just stay here… It’s expensive, and gas prices are high,” she said, noting the impact on their usual practice of visiting multiple churches.
Others, however, chose to maintain the tradition despite the added cost. Bert, 46, who has observed Visita Iglesia for over 20 years, said his family prepared in advance. “We’re used to this tradition… even with higher gas prices, we saved up to continue it,” he said.
For younger devotees like Elma, 23, the practice remains a meaningful family tradition. She said they traveled from General Trias to include St. Mary Magdalene Church in their itinerary.
Even as fuel costs rise, many devotees showed that faith and tradition endure, with Visita Iglesia remaining a key expression of devotion during Holy Week.
