Vice President Sara Duterte said she has already recruited a prospective running mate for the 2028 national elections but declined to disclose the person’s identity, saying she wants to protect the individual’s decision-making process.
In an interview over SMNI’s “Vox Populi” program, Duterte confirmed that discussions with the potential vice-presidential candidate began last year. She said details will remain private for now.
According to Duterte, her chosen partner would play a key role in ensuring accountability among public officials accused of wrongdoing, allowing her to focus on presidential duties if elected in 2028.
Duterte formally announced her bid for president on 18 February, months after publicly breaking ties with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., whom she supported in the 2022 elections.
She earlier apologized to Filipinos for helping secure Marcos’ victory and has since criticized what she described as shortcomings in the current administration.
Despite her announcement, speculation continues over possible running mates. Names floated in political circles and media reports include Sen. Imee Marcos and Sen. Robin Padilla, though Duterte has not confirmed any individual.
