Commuters continue to endure heavy traffic along the 23.8-kilometer stretch of EDSA four decades after it became the site of the People Power Revolution, the Lawyers for Commuters Safety and Protection (LCSP) said on Sunday.
In a statement sent to the Daily Tribune, the group said that if there is one enduring reminder of EDSA today, it is the daily inconvenience faced by motorists and commuters.
"So ano nagyari sa pag-asa ng EDSA forty years ago ? Tulad ng araw araw na karanasan ng mga motorista. NATRAPIK! At hindi nakarating sa dapat na patutunguhan," LCSP chairman and founder Atty. Ariel Inton said.
Inton argued that beyond traffic congestion, what has also stalled over the past four decades are what he described as unfulfilled promises of reform from leaders who served after the 1986 uprising.
"Edsa 40 years na trapik na pangako. Hindi lamang mga sasakyan ang natratrapik sa EDSA. Kahit ang pangako ng pagbabago ay 40 taon nang natrapik," the LCSP said.
The group also raised concerns over political dynasties, corruption and poverty, and questioned restrictions imposed during commemorations of the revolution.
"Nanatili pa rin ang mga political dynasties. Lumawak pa nga, at mas dumami pa ang mga ito. Lumala korapsyon sa pamahalaan at kahirapan ng masa. Kahit sa pagunita ng EDSA Revolution mismong mga organizers na ang nag-sasabi ng mga kondisyon ano ang puede at hindi," Inton pointed out.
"Bawal ang resign marcos na panawagan pero tahimik naman sila kung bawal ang impeach Sara. Panagutin daw lahat ng korap pero hindi matukoy sino ang dapat isama sa " lahat". May binigyan ng permit mag rally meron naman hindi. Dati ang EDSA ay simboli ng pgkakaisa. Pero ngayon dahil sa mga pahayag ng mga self proclaimed organizers at ilan opisyal ay pagkawatak watak ng mga democratic forces ang resulta. Depende kung ano political agenda ng bawat grupo," the LCSP explained.
The group said it would conduct its own observance of the People Power revolt if barred from holding activities along EDSA.
"Kung bawal kami sa edsa may iba namang daan para maihayag ang damdamin tungo sa pagbabago ng pinangako noon sa edsa. At baka doon walang trapik tayong mararanasan," it added.
