Two-time World Championship medalist Kamila Sellier was taken to a hospital after a competitor’s blade cut above her left eye during the women’s 1500-meter speedskating event at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics on Friday night, 20 February 2026.
The Polish speedskater was leading the quarterfinal race when she was overtaken by Italy’s Arianna Fontana. As the skaters jostled for position on a tight turn, Sellier lost her balance and fell. During the incident, the blade of American skater Kristen Santos-Griswold struck Sellier’s face.
Fontana and Santos-Griswold also fell following the collision, prompting officials to halt the race.
Sellier remained on the ice for several minutes while receiving medical attention. She was later stretchered off to applause from spectators at the Milano Skating Arena and transported to a nearby hospital.
Initial reports indicated that medical personnel immediately treated and stitched the wound at the venue before transferring Sellier for further evaluation.
The Milano Cortina Games mark the 25-year-old Sellier’s second Winter Olympics appearance after competing in the 2022 Beijing Games.
