President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is scheduled to visit Naga City, Camarines Sur, on Saturday, a known bailiwick of former Vice President Leni Robredo.
However, Malacañang was quick to distance the trip from speculation that the administration is courting Robredo as a potential ally for the 2028 national elections, where Vice President Sara Duterte is expected to mount a presidential bid.
“Wala pong anumang update kung nililigawan ang sinuman dahil ang sabi nga po natin kahapon po ay wala pa po sa isipan ng Pangulo at ng administrasyon na ito ang patungkol sa pamumulitika o humanap ng sinumang kandidato para sa 2028,” Palace press officer and Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro, who was wearing a pink Filipiniana, said during a press briefing on Thursday.
Political analysts have said Robredo could pose a roadblock to Duterte’s candidacy should she decide to run in the presidential race.
“Darating po ang panahon na iyan. Sa ngayon po, ang tutok po ng Pangulo ay trabaho, ‘ayan po, ayusin ang mga isyu patungkol sa baha at ang pag-angat po ng ekonomiya ng bansa,” Castro added.
Castro said Marcos will go to Naga to personally inspect the development of Oplan Kontra Baha at Sagop Creek, a critical waterway in the city.
Asked whether the President and Robredo would discuss other matters, including a possible alliance against Duterte, Castro said the public should wait.
“Iyan ang abangan ninyo. Iyon lang po ang ibinigay na impormasyon dahil nga po pinasisimulan nga po ng Pangulo itong Oplan Kontra Baha at isa sa mga lugar na kaniyang pinatutukan ay ang Naga City. So, iyon lamang po. Kung ano pa ang pag-uusapan nila abangan na lang po natin,” she said, adding that it is too early to reveal plans for the 2028 polls.
Castro maintained that the President is not threatened by Duterte’s decision and will not be affected by it.
“Wala, hindi maaapektuhan. Maaapektuhan ba ng isang bise presidente na nag-announce lamang siya na siya ay tatakbo ang pagtatrabaho ng Pangulo? Kung ang iisipin lamang ng Pangulo natin ay ang mga sinasabi ng Bise Presidente, hindi na tatakbo ang gobyernong ito. So, hindi po maaapektuhan ang focus ng Pangulo para maiangat ang ekonomiya ng bansa, maiangat ang buhay ng bawat Pilipino, at masolusyunan ang isyu sa baha na hindi nasolusyunan noon pa,” she said.
Vice President Duterte on Wednesday announced that she will run for president in May 2028.
