Moderate explosion hits Mt. Kanlaon

Jerod Orcullo

A moderate explosion was recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Thursday afternoon at Mt. Kanlaon in Negros Island.

In a video released on the agency’s social media page, the volcano was seen emitting a two-kilometer-high dark gray plume at 4:38 p.m.

The volcanic activity lasted about two minutes and generated a pyroclastic density current that traveled approximately one kilometer southwest from the crater.

Despite the eruption, Mt. Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 2, a status it has maintained for the past several weeks, according to PHIVOLCS.

Entry into the volcano’s four-kilometer permanent danger zone continues to be strictly prohibited as the agency monitors Kanlaon’s activity.
