TACLOBAN CITY — A passenger van rammed into a 10-wheeler truck killing the van driver and his three passengers amid heavy rains in Barangay San Fernando, Basey, Samar, around 7:00 AM February 10.
Report from the initial investigation shows the van owned by Duptours Shuttle Services was travelling from Borongan City to Tacloban City with 10 people on board including the driver suddenly crashed into a parked truck.
The front of the van was severely crushed due to the impact which resulted to the death of two women, a male passenger and the driver right on the spot. Investigators are still trying to establish the identity of the casualties.
Rescue personnel had a hard time extracting the passengers who were trapped inside the van. Passengers who were injured from the road crash were immediately brought to the Basey District Hospital for treatment.
A witness said the driver could have lost control of vehicle due to its fast speed even when the road was wet due to continuous raining. He said a number of road crashes have happened in the area in the past due to the tendency of drivers to ride fast when passing the area because of sparse population.
